Department: Behavioral Medicine Center - Adult & Adolescent Unit

Position: Registered Nurse (RN)

Schedule: Full-Time 12/hr shifts (84 hours/pay period), every other weekend/holiday

Shift:  Night Shift (7:00 pm - 7:30 am)

Rate of Pay: Based on experience level starting at $ 24.41/hour to $ 32.21/hour

Night Shift Premium: $ 1.10/hour

**Sign-on Bonus of $6,000 for eligible full-time and $3,000 for eligible part-time positions

General Summary:  In addition to the staff registered nurse responsibilities, assists the Nurse Manager in supervising and evaluating professional and non-professional personnel in delivering the appropriate quality of care and maintains continuity of care for patients within the assigned unit. Provides counseling as needed and is a resource person for other nursing personnel in the assigned unit. Performs duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of HealthSource Saginaw and any applicable Federal, State and/or regulatory guidelines.


Principal duties and responsibilities:
•Assists in overseeing and directing subordinate personnel in assigned unit to ensure effective nursing care by promoting safety, good communication and appropriate delegation. Assists in maintaining continuity of care for patients within assigned unit and serves as a resource person to nursing personnel.
•Works closely with the Nurse Manager and Director of Nursing, as appropriate. Evaluates patient care needs in assigned unit, determines work priorities and makes daily work assignments. Assists in evaluating and obtaining the appropriate staffing necessary to meet the needs of patients. (e.g. safety, acuity, seclusion/restraints, 1:1, etc)
•Assists in overseeing the planning of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation and enforces nursing standards to ensure safe, therapeutically effective nursing care.
•Monitors the effectiveness of activities by nursing staff through direct observation on a daily basis and initiates necessary corrective actions.
•Assists in revising or developing standards of care and policy and procedures, implements and administers such.
• Orients and trains employees within assigned unit. Assists in evaluating the work of subordinates and recommends/implements disciplinary actions when necessary.
•Using evidence – based practice/guidelines, assists with the development, evaluation and presentation of inservice, educational programs, and nursing care conferences, within assigned unit.
•Develops and maintains cooperative working relationships with variety of facility departments necessary to schedule appointments, order supplies, gather and exchange information, resolve operational problems and improve services provided.
•Assists with the ongoing Performance Improvement program with the data gathering and the monitoring of same.
•Serves on committees and attends staff meetings. Attends all mandatory inservices and meetings and maintains and enhances own personal and professional growth and development.
•Regularly performs the duties of a registered nurse which include providing complex patient care including assessing patient's condition, developing patient care plans, administering complex medications and treatments and documenting such. Assists with admissions and discharges, notifies physician of patient condition changes (e.g. critical labs, x-rays, etc).
•Practices Standard Precautions, Utilizing hand washing and barrier use when there is risk of contact with blood, body fluid, mucous membrane or non-intact skin. Provides barrier for self when there is evidence of non-intact skin on hands.
•Directs and coordinates on shift emergency situations (e.g. Code Blue, Code 22, safety/security, fire, internal/external disaster, severe weather, bomb threat, etc).
•Participates in nursing personnel review and evaluations
•Responsible for working knowledge of regulatory standards (e.g. Joint Commission, CMS Hospital CoPs, Mental Health Codes, etc) and for enforcement of such regulations.
•Implements specific responsibilities as delegated by Nurse Manager or Director of Nursing. May assume responsibility for some of the nursing management functions as assigned in their absence.
•Performs other duties as assigned by the Nurse Manager/Director of Nursing.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
•Graduation from an accredited school of nursing of 2 and/or 4 years and holding a current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Michigan.
•Must possess interpersonal skills sufficient to provide effective leadership for assigned subordinates and to interact with patients, significant others, physicians and a variety of facility departments.
•Work requires the analytical ability necessary to identify problems, plan for their resolution, monitor and evaluate outcome.
•Must possess interpersonal skills to interact positively and effectively with a variety of patients/families/visitors, physicians, other disciplines and be able to maintain a positive, therapeutic milieu and employee morale within the assigned unit.
•The nurse must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and culture of the patients served on his/her assigned unit. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit/department's policies and procedures.
